The Shaanxi Grand Mosque
As one of the important tour destinations in Xinjiang, Shaanxi Grand Mosque is one of the biggest Hui Muslim’s mosques in Urumqi, the mosque is located on the South Heping Road( Peace Road). It was built around the reign of Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). Later, it was renovated and extended in the thirty-second year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu(1906) in the Qing Dynasty.
Introduction of Shaanxi Grand Mosque
Shaanxi Grand Mosque, also known as Dongda Mosque, it was built in the Qing Dynasty and it is the largest mosque in Urumqi, and it can accommodate thousands of people to worship at the same time. Compare with other mosques in Urumqi, this ancient building was hidden in these high rise buildings, meanwhile Shanxi Grand Mosque is not a dome arch, in some It has merged with Chinese architectural style, which is quite surprising and admirable.
What to visit in Shaanxi Grand Mosque
The main hall is a brick and wooden structure facing to east, 10 meters high and 250 square meters in area, it can accommodate more than 500 Muslims doing their religious service at the same time. When you entering the main hall, you can enjoy the traditional simple architectural style but without any idols or figures in it. The Islam doctrine prohibiting the use of idols and animal patterns as decoration in mosques is strictly followed.

With the traditional Chinese architectural style of wooden structures is maintained, Shaanxi Grand Mosque reflects the architectural cream of the Chinese traditional civilization in Xinjiang, it is on the list of historical relics to be protected by the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
