Dunhuang Museum
As one of the exhibitions focusing on the Silk Road and Mogao Grottoes culture in North west of China, Dunhuang Museum has become a good place to understand the history and the art of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, which is worth to visit.
What to see in Dunhuang Museum
The appearance of the museum is quite special, it looks like the wall and beacon tower of the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty. When you walking into the interior of the museum, just like you will get into a grotto group, that is quite fantastic. OK! let’s continue to visit, you will find that the walls and corridors inside are all the forms of ancient grotto corridors, which are very distinctive. Altogether it has six exhibition halls in the museum, but the main exhibition is the theme exhibition of the Dunhuang Museum - "The City of Huarong Intersection". It takes about 1 to 2 hours to visit.
The exhibition "The City of Huarong Intersection" runs through the whole museum, according to the age, it can be divided into the different units, and travelers can be visited in sequence from one layer to another. It has 13 units, which are Dunhuang's ancient history and inhabitants, Dunhuang's great development in the Han Dynasty, Dunhuang's development in the Wei, Jin period, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Dunhuang's prosperity in Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, Shazhou Huihu and Western Xia’s domination of Dunhuang, the development of Dunhuang in Yuan and Ming Dynasties, the discovery of a cave for preserving Buddhist sutra, the anti-grain movement in Qing Dynasty and the ancient coins on the Silk Road, etc. These units are mainly distributed to the age, along the same passageway as the grotto corridor from ancient times to the present, to experience the history of Dunhuang history for thousands of years.
The Classification of Museum Exhibitions
The exhibits in the museum are mainly divided into two categories. One is mainly about the art of Mogao Grottoes. There are duplicates of Grottoes No. 45 which have not been developed in Mogao Grottoes, we can see the patterns of grottoes that reflect music in legends, some of the Dunhuang bamboo slips, also known as "Dunhuang Manuscripts", are very precious. The other one is the Silk Road Culture exhibition, in which the Beiliang Stone Pagoda, portrait bricks to name just a few are quite elegant and beautiful, among which Kirin bricks are rare in the whole country, which can be regarded as the treasure of this museum, and should not be missed.
