What to Visit in Urumqi?

A road trip is a perfect way to explore the charm of Urumqi; the city is widely recognized for its heavenly beauty, exotic customs, the modern and Islamic-style architecture, the distinctive ethnic products, as well as delicious Xinjiang cuisine. Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, the best go-to-choice for shopping and get-togethers in Urumqi, and it is also the world's largest bazaar by scale, combining Islamic culture, architecture, and entertainment. It is famous for Uyghur food and handicrafts, as well as street dancing.
About 100 kilometres east of Urumqi City is Heavenly Lake ( Tianchi ), it is a natural alpine lake shaped like a half-moon. Surrounded by snow mountains with green spruce, the lake is like a sapphire falling from the sky, which has drawn streams of tourists.

Weather and Climate of Urumqi:

Urumqi has a mid-temperate continental arid climate, and the large temperature difference between day and night. The hottest month is July and August, with an average temperature of 25.7°C; the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of -15.2°C.
Spring (March to June): spring comes in March every year; green waves can be seen in the park or mountainous area in April. The annual precipitation in Spring is about 40%, which is very beneficial to spring sowing and dryland crops.
Summer (June-July): It is an excellent place to enjoy your summer vacation.
Autumn (August-October): The weather is mild and pleasant. This is the best time to go to the rural pastures in Baiyanggou.
Winter (November to February): The winter in Urumqi lasts for 150 days from November 3 to April 8 of the following year. Winter tourism has become a main feature of Urumqi. Among them, the winter tourism activities such as "pick the sheep" in the snow and "girl chase," which is an ideal winter resort.

How to Get to Urumqi:

There are three ways to get to Urumqi: Flights, Trains, and Cars

1. Go to Urumqi by Air:

Urumqi Diwopu International Airport: Located in Diwopu, northwest of the suburbs of Urumqi; currently, it has the flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other major cities are available as well as daily connections to Kashgar. Some international flights (not all daily) to Moscow and Islamabad are also available. Urumqi Metro Line 1 has a station here.
 

2. Go to Urumqi by Train:

There are two railway stations in Urumqi: Urumqi Railway Station and Urumqi South Station.
Urumqi Railway Station: In the northwest of Urumqi City, it is the largest train station in Urumqi. There are EMU trains bound for Lanzhou.
Urumqi South Railway Station: This station is mainly handling passenger transportation services for trains that depart from Urumqi Railway Station and pass through Urumqi South Station to Kashgar, Hami, Korla and other Southern Xinjiang cities.
 

3. Drive to Urumqi:

Highway Traffic in Xinjiang is well-developed and drive to Urumqi is also the best way to enjoy the splendid views. Here, we have listed some special tourist lines to Heavenly Lake ( 67.7 km ), Turpan ( 193 km ), Shihezi ( 145.7 km ), etc.
 

Travel Tips of Urumqi:

1. Urumqi Geography: Located at the northern foot of the eastern section of the Tianshan mountains and on the southeastern edge of Jungar Basin, Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang.
2. Population: Urumqi is inhabited by the Han, Uygur, Kazak, Mongolia and other nationalities of over 40, totaling over 1.5 million in population.
3. Local Cuisine: Kebab, Pilaf, Naan, Big Plate Chicken.
4. What to Pack: some daily necessities, Passport, camera, sunscreeen products and coat.
5. Equation of Time: Actually, there is a two hour difference in longitude between Urumqi and Beijing For this reason the daily working hours are: 10: 00 - 14:00,15:30-19:30.
